Design

Designed by artist Claire Watson, the reverse of the $1 coin features a portrait of Elsie MacGill (1905-1980), an aeronautical pioneer and women's rights advocate, indicated by the lapel pin she wears representing her mandates. as provincial (Ontario) and national president of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. The sky background highlights some of MacGill's historic engineering achievements, including the Maple Leaf Trainer II (above), the first aircraft produced and designed by a woman, and her key role in the wartime production of the Hawker Hurricane. , which stands out on the colored coin.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II made by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special mark that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have adorned Canadian coins and the double date of his reign.
