This coin commemorates the Donetsk Oblast, a geographical area located in the southeast of Ukraine. Ukrainian Cossack settlements appeared in today's Donetsk Oblast 500 years ago. Later, they formed the Kalmius district of the Lower Zaporozhian army (located beyond the Dnipro rapids). Donetsk Oblast borders Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts to the west, Kharkiv Oblast to the northwest, and Lugansk Oblast and Russian Rostov Oblast to the northeast and east. In the south, it is surrounded by the Azov Sea. It is a region of industrial and coal production.
