10 euros FRANCE 2023 - Freedom leading the people, Eugène Delacroix

Description

La Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the greatest masterpieces present in French museums or that have been painted in France.

Liberty Leading the People is a painting by Eugène Delacroix from 1830. That same year, Charles X, who reigned in France, decided to reverse the achievements of the revolution by suppressing freedom of the press. This law causes an uprising of the people that lasts 3 days, called the "3 Glorious Ones." The artist, in homage to this revolution, painted a woman waving the French flag in the light and leading the people. Today, this work is kept in the Louvre Museum.

The obverse depicts one of Eugène Delacroix's most famous works: Liberty Leading the People, painted in 1830 depicting Marianne brandishing the French flag. The coins focus on Marianne and Gavroche. In the upper right part, the "museum masterpieces" stamp has been added, which signs all the coins in this series and is confused with the work. The particularity of the €10 Silver is that it is colored. The Louvre Museum, in which the work is exhibited, is an integral part of the drawing since it represents one of the parts of the frame. The name of the work, that of the artist as well as the year 2023 complete the decoration around the painting. .

The reverse is common to the series, presenting a mix of views of several important French museums: at the top left, is an interior view of the Musée d'Orsay, recognizable by its magnificent clock. Next to it, there is a view of the facade of the Louvre, visible from Napoleon's courtyard (where the famous pyramid is located). Below these two elements, we see a fresco present in the Hôtel Salé that houses the Picasso museum. The lower part of the reverse shows a view of the façade of the Hôtel Biron, which is the current Musée Rodin. Upstairs, we find the famous staircase of the Pompidou Center. The face value, the mention "French Republic" as well as the difference from the Monnaie de Paris are also inscribed on this reverse.
