Tribute to the women who contributed to the history of France
This series of coins highlights the women who marked the history of France. Through their portrait and the significant events of their lives, the engravers of the Monnaie de Paris have transcribed the personality of those famous women. Some textures treated as textile motifs appear on the background of the coins.
The obverse shows a portrait of Simone Veil smiling as she looks at us. Her name Simone Veil and her dates "1927-2017" form a circle around her portrait.
This coin is characterized by a free minting process that highlights a rich textile motif. The background of the coin represents the olive branches embroidered on the academic garment, worn during official ceremonies. This quality of minting gives the coins an antique look and makes them “perfectly imperfect.”
The reverse shows several elements that echo his exceptional public life: firstly, in the background the ceiling of the Pantheon is engraved, where it currently remains.
On the right is her academic sword, which she had engraved with the number 78651 that had been tattooed on her arm in the Auschwitz camps.
The caduceus, at the top of the coin, reminds us of its crucial role in the Ministry of Health. The scales below represent her career as a magistrate. The European flag pays tribute to his presidency in the European Parliament.
These different stages of her life are engraved around the edge of the coin and create a circle. The word "RF" and the year of issue are visible at the bottom of the coin.
