In 2021, Monnaie de Paris highlights the Mustang P51. Initially confined as a reconnaissance and ground support aircraft, it represented an innovation thanks to its laminar profile wings, thus improving its aerodynamics.
It was during World War II that he was able to claim the title of best fighter thanks to a new engine that allowed him to be a strategic asset on the Western Front, particularly in 1944 when he played a decisive role in air superiority in Germany.
The obverse shows a P-51 Mustang taking off. In the background, you can see the sun's rays hidden by a cloud.
The mention "NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION" refers to the manufacturer of this aircraft.
The vintage is also present, on the right wing of the plane.
The P-51 pictured is an aircraft that was assigned to the 84th Fighter Squadron, which goes by the name "Contrary Mary." It was the personal plane of Lieutenant Colonel Roy Caviness.
The reverse , common to the series, presents the profiles of two pilots, symbolizing the different eras and types of use: civil and military. In the sky there are several aircraft, also representative of the different eras and uses, in homage to the history of aviation.
The face value is inscribed at the bottom left of the reverse, as is the "RF" symbol.
