Fourth US dollar 2023 - Edith Kanaka?ole
The American Women Quarters™ program is a four-year series celebrating the achievements and contributions made by women who have shaped our nation's history and helped pave the way for generations to come. Beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2025, the Mint will issue five quarters each year with reverse designs (tails) honoring a group of notable American women.
The new wards honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from diverse ethnic, racial and geographic backgrounds.
Edith Kanaka?ole was a songwriter, singer, kumu hula, and custodian of Hawaii's native culture, traditions, and natural land.
Reverse (tails) shows a portrait of Edith Kanaka?ole, with her hair and lei po?o (head lei) transforming into the elements of a Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing Kanaka?ole's life and her work to preserve natural land and traditional Hawaiian style. culture. The inscription “E h? mai ka ?ike” translates as “granting wisdom,” and is a reference to the intertwined role that hula and chanting play in this preservation. Additional inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "25¢" and "EDITH KANAKA?OLE".
Common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. The inscriptions are "FREEDOM", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2023".
