US Quarter Dollar 2023 - Bessie Coleman

The American Women Quarters™ program is a four-year series celebrating the achievements and contributions made by women who have shaped our nation's history and helped pave the way for generations to come. Beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2025, the Mint will issue five quarters each year with reverse designs (tails) honoring a group of prominent American women.

These quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including: suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from diverse ethnic, racial and geographic backgrounds.

Bessie Coleman was a pilot, advocate, and pioneer who flew at high altitudes as the first African American pilot and the first Native American and the first African American to earn an international pilot's license.

The reverse design shows Bessie Coleman preparing for flight, her expression reflecting her determination to fly, the only place where she experienced a freedom she did not have on the ground. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "QUARTER DOLLAR", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "BESSIE COLEMAN" and "6.15.1921", the date Coleman received his pilot's license.

The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. The inscriptions are "FREEDOM", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2023".
