A shared national celebration. While National Indigenous Peoples' Day (June 21) is the national day dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in Canada, this coin is an open invitation to learn and honor the First Nations, the Inuit. and the Métis peoples and their histories and heritages.
A unique collaboration. As creative voices of their distinct identities and experiences, three artists worked together to create a powerful, blended design, the first on a circulating coin.
A colorful celebration.
Design
To celebrate National Indigenous Peoples' Day, the 2023 circulating $2 commemorative coin combines the art of Megan Currie, English River First Nation, Myrna Pokiak (Agnaviak, Inuvialuit Settlement Region, and Jennine Krauchi, Métis de Red River. Their co-creation strikingly combines their expressions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures, art and traditions and is an open invitation to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II made by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special mark that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have adorned Canadian coins and the double date of his reign.
