In 2023, France will host its second Rugby World Cup, following the 2007 tournament. This competition is the most prestigious rugby tournament in the world and has been held every four years since 1987. To prepare for this major sporting event, Monnaie de Paris, in collaboration with Rugby World Cup 2023, has launched a series of collector coins. celebrating sport.
This series is dedicated to some of the great European rugby nations, particularly the Anglo-Saxon countries where the sport originated. France, England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland appear in five quarters (€1/4), while the sixth is dedicated to the 2023 Rugby World Cup emblem.
In the center of the coin is the tower of Trinity College Dublin. On the right, a rugby player makes a defensive gesture by holding the ball against himself. On the other side of the tower, the Irish rugby flag is represented on a shield in heraldry. The name of the country is written in English and French, following the shape of the currency.
The common reverse of the series features the Webb Ellis Trophy, which the winner of the World Cup will have the pleasure of lifting. To the left of the glass is the inscription RF and to the right the face value ¼€. The Rugby World Cup logo is inserted below. Surrounding the design are the words "Coupe du Monde Rugby France 2023".
