D-Day is a term used generically by the Allied military in World War II to indicate the day on which an attack or combat operation was carried out. Historically, the term D-Day is used to refer to June 6 , 1944 in World War II , the day on which the so-called Operation Overlord began to be carried out. This operation consisted of carrying out a large landing on the beaches of Normandy as a strategy to open a new front in Western Europe. and reduce German dominance, although it began at dawn with the landing of three gliders of the 6th Airborne Division of the British Army and the subsequent capture of Pegasus Bridge by the Company D of the 2nd Oxfordshire Light Infantry Regiment and Buckinghamshire, integrated into the Air Landing Brigade of said Division. The original day for the landing had been set for June 5 , 1944 , but poor weather and sea conditions caused the Supreme Commander of the Allies, Dwight David Eisenhower , to will postpone it until June 6, giving them more time to rehearse their movements. Because of this, this last date is popularly known as the little D-day . In French it is called Jour J or Le Choc .
