For more than 40 years, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has listed sites that are part of “world heritage cultural property sites.” Since 2007, Monnaie de Paris has paid tribute to several monuments included in this list in a series of collector coins. Starting in 2019, this theme expands once again throughout the world.
In 2021, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to one of the first explorers to undertake and succeed on a world tour, Fernand de Magellan (1480-1521).
On the obverse of this coin is engraved the portrait of Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese navigator and explorer.
The Victory that sails the seas and oceans is shown on the coin. It was the first ship to sail around the world on its expedition to the Moluccas Islands. This is expressed in the background world map, which also shows the route taken by Magellan and his crew. Parallels and meridians are also represented.
The "500 years" symbolize the tribute of his death. The face value is inscribed at the bottom center of the coin.
The reverse of the coin represents the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar in Portugal. More precisely, it shows the window of the central nave decorated with numerous Manueline style motifs, in particular "ropes" reminiscent of those used on ships during the time of the great discoveries.
The year 2021 and what is different about Joaquín Jiménez are present at the bottom of the reverse.
The RF mention is in the upper right corner.
