In 2021, Monnaie de Paris celebrates the 80th anniversary of Free France and pays tribute to Franco-British friendship through an iconic political couple: Charles de Gaulle, then general and leader of Free France, and Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom .
The latter played a key role in the French resistance by supporting General de Gaulle to ensure his legitimacy and allowing Free France to be recognized in the eyes of the Allies. In recognition of his support, Charles de Gaulle presented Winston Churchill with the Liberation Cross in 1958.
The obverse of the coin shows the profiles of Charles de Gaulle in the foreground and Winston Churchill in the background, both dressed in military uniform. Their names are displayed above their profiles. The French and British flags are shown in color with the words RF on the French flag and 80 years on the British flag in reference to the 80 years of Free France which was founded in London.
The reverse of the coins shows France and Great Britain with a common background to highlight their alliance during World War II. The words "1941-2021 ANNIVERSARY OFREE FRANCE" are stamped on the Cross of Lorraine, the symbol of Free France, and include the year of issue. The face value of the coin is shown to the right of the cross.
