In 2012 , the sixth was put into circulation. issue of a commemorative 2 euro coin, dedicated on this occasion to the Cathedral of Burgos , one of the most beautiful monuments of Gothic art which earned the title of World Heritage Site in 1984 .

On its reverse side an image of the Burgos Cathedral is shown. This is the third coin of the annual series dedicated to the sites in Spain included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.


Introduction

One of the most beautiful and representative buildings of European Gothic art is the Burgos Cathedral.

His Construction began there in the year 1221, by order of King Ferdinand III the Saint. However, his works continued until 1765. In fact, in the 15th century, commissioned by Bishop Alonso of Cartagena, Juan de Colonia raised the slender spiers that crown the towers of the main façade and, at the end of the same century, Simón de Colonia commissioned to build for the Constable of Castile, Don Pedro Fernández de Velasco, the so-called chapel of the Condestables. Of Renaissance style is the altarpiece of the main chapel where the carving of Santa María la Mayor.

Due to its magnitude and beauty, the Burgos Cathedral obtained the well-deserved title of World Heritage Site in 1984.

In honor of this magnificent building, the Royal Mint has made a joint issue with Correos of a wallet containing a 2 Euro coin and a commemorative block sheet stamp.
