The United States Mint's American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series that honors innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam , American Samoa, US Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands. American Innovation $1 coins in rolls and bags were minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The Mississippi coin is the fourth of 2023.
The reverse (tails) design of the Mississippi American Innovation $1 coin features a pair of human lungs in the background, as a surgical assistant passes forceps to the surgeon during the first lung transplant surgery. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “FIRST HUMAN LUNG TRANSPLANTATION” and “MISSSIPPI”.
The obverse (heads) design features a dramatic depiction of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also includes a private label of a stylized team that represents industry and innovation.
This roll of American Innovation - Mississippi $1 coins contains 25 circulating quality coins minted at the Denver Mint.
The year of minting, the mint mark and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are engraved on the edge of the coins.
