This coin celebrates a city that lies on the Kazenyi Torets River, which is next to the salt lakes of Tor. The history of the city dates back to the times when the area was part of the Wild Fields, a steppe area in Ukraine. In 1645, a small fort was built at the site of the river crossing. A fortress city was later founded there (known as Tor or Solianyi until 1784). By the end of the 18th century, it had become the main town of that district, where merchants came from all over Slobidska Ukraine (a historical region, now located in northeastern Ukraine and southwestern Russia). The development of the city has historically been associated with the salt industry: the production of salt and the treatment of patients with salt water and therapeutic mud. The modern city of Sloviansk has become a symbol of Ukraine's struggle to regain occupied areas it lost to Russian aggression in 2014.
