The Elysée Treaty was a treaty of friendship between France and West Germany, signed by President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on January 22, 1963 at the Elysée Palace in Paris. With the signing of this treaty, Germany and France established the foundations of a new relationship that put an end to centuries of Franco-German enmity.

He treaty affirmed the need for periodic consultations between France and West Germany for all important issues related with defense, education and youth. Likewise, the treaty establishes the need for periodic high-level summits, so that the heads of state and government of both countries must meet at least twice a year and the foreign ministers every three months, to ensure close cooperation between both countries

The first meeting between the two heads of state took place at Charles de Gaulle's private home in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises in September 1958. Since then, the French and German heads of state have maintained a close relationship, considerate of frequency as the driving force of European integration

Besides, An inter-ministerial commission was established to coordinate and supervise cooperation between both nations. The commission is made up of senior officials from each of the ministries involved.
