1 dollar United States 2022 - Kentucky "Bluegrass"
Introduced in 2018 and authorized by Public Law 115-197, the American Innovation® $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series featuring distinctive reverse (tails) designs that honor America's ingenuity and celebrate the pioneering efforts by individuals or groups from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
The design of the 2022 American Innovation Kentucky $1 coin recognizes the invention of bluegrass music. Bluegrass has roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes, as well as traditional African-American blues and jazz. The reverse (tails) design features a banjo, an important bluegrass instrument, tilted to one side, alluding to the rhythm and movement of the music. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "BLUEGRASS" and "KENTUCKY". The design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Christina Hess and sculpted by Mint Medal artist Renata Gordon.
The obverse (sides) of all coins in this series feature a dramatic depiction of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$1." It also includes a private label of a stylized team, representing industry and innovation. AIP designer Justin Kunz created the design, which was sculpted by Mint Medallic artist Phebe Hemphill.
