American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Dollar Coin

Description

The American Legion is a United States military veterans organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The organization was founded on March 15, 1919, in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces, out of concern for the well-being of soldiers and the communities to which they returned in the United States after World War I. The nonpartisan organization is the nation's largest veterans group, with nearly two million members in more than 12,000 positions across the United States.

The Legion focuses its efforts in four areas: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Children and Youth, Homeland Security and Americanism. These areas are known as "the four pillars" of American Legion service. Throughout his years of service to the nation, he has been a catalyst for social change and has recorded countless achievements. The Legion's advocacy on behalf of veterans has been instrumental in the passage of numerous laws, including the Servicemen's Rehabilitation Act of 1944, better known as the GI Bill, and multiple legislation to promote government recognition and promote effective treatment of service-related conditions.

Obverse

It depicts the emblem of the American Legion adorned with oak leaves and a lily, commemorating the founding of the American Legion in Paris, France.

The emblem of the American Legion is a five-pointed star with the insignia "US" enclosed in two brass bands in the center of the star. This design is encased in a crown. Surrounding the star and wreath are the words "American Legion" in deep blue enamel. This, in turn, is surrounded by a narrow band suggesting the sun's rays.
