US Quarter Dollar 2022 - Dr. Sally Ride
DESCRIPTION
The United States Mint American Women Quarters™ program is a four-year series celebrating the achievements and contributions made by notable women in the United States. Beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2025, the Mint will issue five new quarters each year with reverse designs honoring notable American women.
The new wards honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from diverse ethnic, racial and geographic backgrounds.
Wilma Mankiller appears on the third coin flipped on this show.
Wilma Mankiller was the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller's administration revitalized the Cherokee Nation through extensive community development, including improvements in health care and education. Mankiller's leadership on social and financial issues made his tribe a national role model.
After leaving office, she continued to be a strong voice around the world for social justice, indigenous peoples and women. In her 1993 autobiography, she said she wanted to be remembered for emphasizing that Cherokee values can help solve contemporary problems. Mankiller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
The reverse design (tails) represents Wilma Mankiller with a determined look towards the future. The wind blows at her back and she is wrapped in a traditional shawl. To his left is the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. It was designed by United States Mint Art Infusion Program Designer Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint Medalist Artist Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "QUARTER DOLLAR", "WILMA MANKILLER", "CHIEF CHIEF" and the name of the Cherokee Nation written in the Cherokee syllabary.
The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. The inscriptions are "FREEDOM", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2022".
Honor the brave steps and achievements of women who have created positive change. We invite you to start your collection of the new American Women Quarters!
